Disrepair Local Authorities

If you are living in rented accommodation that is falling into disrepair, it is likely that is not being properly maintained by the landlord. Living in a severely damaged property can be damaging to your health and wellbeing.

If you are living in housing provided by your local authority the council will have a responsibility to ensure the property meets a certain standard. Your council will be responsible for making sure:

The structure of the property is in good condition, this includes

• Walls
• Ceilings
• Roof
• Doors
• Windows
• Gas and electrical appliances work well
• Shared parts of the building or council estate are well maintained

The council must also ensure the property is fit for purpose, if the property shows any of the following problems, it will not be considered fit for purpose:

• Pest or vermin infestation
• Faulty sewerage or drainage system
• Insufficient access to water
• Is in any way infected

Your landlord is obliged to remedy any of these problems. If they refuse to do so, or the result is not satisfactory then you may be entitled to compensation.
